Should Siblings Split the Portfolio?

Description

When a share portfolio is inherited through an estate, one of the biggest decisions is what to do with those investments moving forward. During the estate process, beneficiaries often need to decide whether they want to continue holding the shares, divide them between family members, or sell them down and receive cash instead. Not everyone will have the same goals. Some siblings may prefer to receive cash, while others may want to keep the shares so they can continue receiving dividends and holding the investment for the future. There are different ways this can be managed. For example, some beneficiaries may choose to keep the shares while others are paid out through cash, or part of the portfolio may be sold down to create a balance between everyone’s preferences. Another option may be for the shares to be distributed directly to each sibling, allowing each person to make their own decisions about whether they want to hold or sell their portion. The important thing is to avoid having a large investment portfolio jointly held by multiple people who may have different financial goals and priorities. By dividing the assets early and allowing each person to manage their own share, everyone can make decisions that best suit their individual circumstances. General advice only.
