The 50% Capital Gains Tax Discount Is Ending,What It Means for Property Investors
Description
The latest budget has introduced major changes to Capital Gains Tax rules, ending the 50% CGT discount for future property purchases.
Instead, the government is returning to an indexation system based on CPI and cost-of-living increases. Existing property owners will keep the current rules under grandfathering provisions, while new purchases from next year will fall under the new tax regime.
A minimum 30% tax on capital gains is also being introduced to prevent people from delaying property sales to reduce taxable income or maximise Centrelink benefits. These reforms are aimed at improving housing affordability while increasing government revenue.
