Before you invest, make sure you actually know what you're putting your money into.

If you're looking at ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds), these are pre-built funds that already hold a mix of businesses. Some track the whole market, some are actively managed. But not all ETFs are the same. Look at what's inside them and make sure those are businesses you actually want to back. You can even find ETFs that target specific themes like climate change if that's something you care about.

If you're going the direct shares route and picking individual companies yourself, it's even more important to understand the business. What do they do, where are they headed, and does that align with where you want your money to go.

Either way, know what you own and make sure it fits with what matters to you.
