How much cash should you actually keep in your bank

21 Jan 2026 · 0:52 · Watch on YouTube

Description

If you’re sitting on a large amount of cash and unsure whether it’s too much, a good rule of thumb in the finance world is three months of expenses. That’s your safety buffer. It’s the sleep-at-night amount that gives you time to recover if you lost your job or needed space to get back on your feet.
Anything above that is personal preference. If holding more cash helps you feel secure, that’s completely fine. But once your buffer is covered, any excess money can usually work harder for you in long term investments, income-generating assets or whatever future goals you’re planning for.
Think of three months as the minimum protective layer. Beyond that, it’s worth considering whether your cash is simply sitting still or helping build your future.
