If one child takes over the farm, how do you make things feel fair for everyone else? #finance

Description

I hear this a lot...

“My parents left everything to my brother because he took over the farm. The rest of us got nothing. How could that have been handled differently?”

Farm succession is one of the most complex conversations regional families face. When land values are high and the parents want to keep the property in the family, it becomes very difficult to create a perfectly equal estate.

The real work starts long before a will is written. It means getting the older generation in early, mapping out what succession actually looks like, and building up other assets for the non-farming children. That could be investment portfolios, superannuation or other growth assets to help balance things out over time.

It is also important to remember that inheriting farming land and inheriting a share portfolio are two very different things. Land comes with responsibility, debt and years of ongoing work. Investments do not. There are pros and cons on both sides, which is why open conversations matter.

If you are part of a farming family and succession feels overwhelming or unfair, you are not alone. With the right structure and planning, there are ways to support every child and still protect the family farm.
