Help to Buy: Just Because You Can Buy, Should You?

24 Aug 2026 · 1:21 · Watch on YouTube

Description

The Help to Buy scheme can be a great option for the right people. While some view the government owning up to 30% of an existing property or 40% of a new build as a negative, it means taking on 30% less debt. The government also shares the downside risk if property values fall. My main concern is allowing people to buy with as little as a 2% deposit, which is often too early before establishing strong saving habits and commitment. Always weigh up the cost of any loan against the rent you currently pay. Do the numbers first, because just because you can buy does not mean you should, and renting is not always dead money.
